The Special Tourist Visa (STV) Is probably the best Thai visa for younger folks who want to spend up to 9 months in Thailand:
Could the Special Tourist Visa be perfect for you if you’re less than 50 years old?
Do you remember this visa?
That’s the “Special Tourist Visa” that was quite common during the time of Covid.
Well, with all the excitement about no-quarantine and “test and go”, that visa is still there now and it’s actually perfect for many of you who want to stay in Thailand longer.
If you’re less than 50 years old and want to spend up to 9 months continuously in Thailand, then this is the visa for you.
It’s perfect if you’re a digital nomad wanting to work online while in Thailand..
It’s perfect if you want to check out Thailand for 6 to 9 months before committing to a full retirement visa.
And It’s the best thing if you want to find out more about Thailand if you are planning for an Elite visa.
Of course if you plan to come to Thailand and you are not sure of when you might return, then this is the visa for you.
The Special Tourist Visa has a few more requirements though.
The first requirement is that you have to pay for at least 3 months of accommodation in Thailand.
We don’t recommend a hotel. Instead we recommend you find a condo with a rental contract for 6 months or more, since you would be planning to stay here for at least that time anyway.
The next step is to pay for travel insurance for the amount of time you have to stay -- that’s generally at a minimum 3 months.
Then you have to get a police background check in your home country and a medical checkup.
You apply for the visa totally online of course and get your printout to take with you to Thailand. No need to send your passport to a Thai embassy anymore. Once you arrive in Thailand your passport will be stamped with the visa.
Don’t forget to apply for your Thailand Pass as well.
One downside to the Special Tourist VIsa is that you cannot “upgrade” it to any other kind of visa as you have to leave Thailand before doing that.
But that’s not such a big deal as many of the smaller countries around Thailand such as Cambodia are reopening again. So a quick visa run is not that difficult.
